New Online Banking Login Requirements
The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) has issued new online authentication guidance for all federally insured financial institutions. Online authentication guidance is a process of verifying online banking users through multiple factors. Multi-factor authentication drastically reduces the risk of online identity theft and other online fraud.
|Some examples of factors are:
||A knowledge factor, something you know (e.g., password, PIN, pattern)
||A possession factor, something you have (e.g., ATM card, smart card, mobile phone)
||An inherence factor, something you are (e.g., biometric characteristic, such as a fingerprint
The new Online Authentication Guidance addresses the need for risk-based assessments, customer awareness, and enhanced security measures to authenticate customers using Internet-based products and services that process "high risk" transactions involving access to customer information or the movement of funds to other parties.
As of October 2013, Heritage Trust members are required to answer these new challenge questions before any high risk transactions will be processed through Online Banking and BillPay.
|"High Risk" transactions include:
||scheduling or editing an ACH or unlinked transfer
||Scheduling or editing bill payments through Online Banking and BillPay
||Updating user address or phone number within the Online Banking environment

HERITAGE TRUST FEDERAL CREDIT UNION
ON-LINE BANKING/BILL PAYMENT
EXPLANATION OF CHANGES TO MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION
In an effort to strengthen the security and protection of the bill payment/account to account transfer functions in our on-line banking platform, our service provider has implemented additional challenge questions that may be asked each time you pay your bills on-line. These increased security measures are being mandated by the FFIEC (Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council).
The questions are knowledge based. That means they are based on “something you know”. You may be asked between 3 and 5 questions. If you answer a question incorrectly, you may have to begin the process again. The questions will change each time you log into the bill payment portion of on-line banking. These questions may appear to be “intrusive” on your personal life, and may reach back several years.
Please be advised that the credit union has no knowledge of the questions being asked and did not have any input regarding the variety or the content of the questions you are asked. Information to develop the questions is obtained by reviewing information contained in credit bureau reports, public records, and other public sources. We will not be held liable for the number or types of questions that are asked.

Online Banking Security
One of the basic tools used to ensure Online security is encryption. Encryption involves exchanging numbers between the end user's browser and the Online Banking server. The numbers act as keys to "unlock" the connection between browser and server, much like numbers on a combination lock. The higher the number of combinations, the less likely it is that an outside party could decipher the key and access sensitive information.
It is also important to verify that only authorized users log into the Online Banking system. We use password verification, a site security image, and Multifactor Authentication (challenge questions) to ensure user authorization. For added security, if a password is entered incorrectly three times, we automatically lock the Online Banking account.
We also "time out" an Online Banking session after 20 minutes of inactivity. This keeps others from viewing or continuing Online Banking activity if you leave your computer unattended.
Online Banking utilizes multiple layers of encryption, screening and firewalls between your data and the Internet, thereby preventing unauthorized access. All of our systems are secured with multiple layers of encryption, firewalls, screening, and filtering routers.Always log off or close your browser window when you are finished with any secure online session.
Heritage Trust wants your online banking experience to be satisfying and hassle-free. If you have comments or questions about your log-in password, browser compatibility, or any other user issues please call our Contact Center.
